Virginia Tech lost a close one to Purdue on Saturday in what was certainly one of the strangest days in the history of Hokie football. It’s not that the Hokies lost. I picked them to win a very close one, 24-20, and I think we all recognized that was a football game that could have gone either way.

Instead, it was two things that bothered me as the day unfolded:

1: The Hokies weren’t prepared when the game started, nor were they prepared after the five-hour delay. They seemed to get schematically schooled on both sides of the ball. Purdue receivers were running wide open. This is the second week in a row where I don’t feel as if the most expensive coaching staff in Tech history has gotten the better of the opposition.

2: The continuing trend of the Virginia Tech running game. Tyler Bowen has now been Virginia Tech’s offensive coordinator for 13 games, and the more things change, the more they stay the same. If anything, the running game is actually getting worse, and that should not be happening.
