Inside The Numbers: Linebackers, Pass Blocking, Available Yards, And More

Xavier Chaplin is No. 1 in the ACC in pass blocking grade, though he struggled in the run game. (Jon Fleming)

Virginia Tech is 1-0 after a 36-17 victory over Old Dominion on Saturday night. Let’s take a closer look at a couple of things that stood out during the game. Today, we’ll focus on the positive numbers that came out of Saturday night’s victory, though I also want to go back and touch on the linebackers again now that the final PFF grades have been released.

Virginia Tech Stands Out In Pass Blocking Grades

It was a good week of pass blocking across the ACC. 32 of the league’s 84 offensive linemen who played at least 10 passing plays graded out at 80+. Included in that list are four of Virginia Tech’s five starting offensive linemen.

Let me start this section out with a note. Kaden Moore’s pass blocking grade for Saturday night is listed as a 0.2. Something was entered into the data wrong or there is some kind of glitch in the matrix. Or maybe those bad snaps on many passing plays were held against him. While Moore is credited with allowing both of the pressures the Hokies allowed as a team, a 0.2 rating does not compute. Hopefully that will be corrected later somewhere down the line.
