Wide receivers, by nature, are always going to lobby their quarterback to throw them the ball more. But when the Hokies’ wideouts kept coming back to the huddle urging Grant Wells to look their way again and again in Virginia Tech’s 36-17 win over Old Dominion on Saturday, it didn’t feel self-serving — it felt like the best course of action.
The receiving transfer trio of Ali Jennings, Jaylin Lane and Da’Quan Felton lived up to its billing in the Hokies’ encouraging season-opening performance in Lane Stadium, combining for 10 receptions, 175 yards, three touchdowns and a handful of chunk plays in an eventually comfortable victory over the Monarchs.
It was the first time in a while Virginia Tech (1-0) showed a passing attack with some bite.
“We’ve all seen each other play, we’ve all seen each other’s film and highlights, so we knew what each other was capable of,” said Jennings, who had five catches, 72 yards and two touchdowns against his former team. “Just to go out and perform in front of everybody for the first time, it felt awesome.”
