The Hokies (1-0) fended off Old Dominion (0-1) in their season opener in front of a sold-out Lane Stadium crowd on Saturday night, 36-17. Here’s are notes on Virginia Tech’s pressure, forcing turnovers, targeting and more:

Under Pressure

The Hokies held Monarchs quarterback Grant Wilson, who had thrown just 13 career passes at the collegiate level (all at FCS Fordham) prior to Saturday, to 94 yards on 25 attempts.

There was constant pressure from the Tech defensive line, which finished with five sacks and eight tackles for loss. The only non-D-lineman with a TFL was linebacker Keli Lawson.

Florida transfer Antwaun Powell-Ryland had a team-high six tackles and two sacks in his first game in Blacksburg, including a sack-fumble that ODU recovered. Keyshawn Burgos, Wilfried Pene and C.J. McCray each recorded a sack while Mario Kendricks and Norell Pollard contributed TFLs, playing in the backfield and rattling Wilson.
