We’ll close the Virginia Tech Signee Scouting Report out with an impressive class of defensive backs. Several look like they’ll be fighting almost immediately for a spot in the two-deep. We’re not quite reliving the halcyon days of DBU, but it does look better in terms of depth now and potential excellence in future years.

A complete cornerback who excelled against a high level of competition, Lovett had offers from Pitt, Cincinnati, Georgia Tech, NC State and others. He smothered receivers in coverage, was physical at the line of scrimmage and had a knack for stripping the ball. He has a high-motor, and literally made plays from one sideline to the other as he tracked down runs going away, including jet sweeps and outside zone plays. Lovett knows how to transition from receiver to receiver in match coverages and looks effortless in doing so. He’s also great at playing the ball and makes tough catches on interceptions. On top of that, he was also a threat with the ball in his hands, whether running back punts or interceptions. He’ll likely need to clean up tackling some, but he brings enough of a load to where he can overcome suboptimal form. He’s not quite as “sudden” as some corners and might do best playing from the press where he can disrupt receivers’ stride off the line.
