For a stretch of August practice for Virginia Tech, the quarterback competition was a see-saw. It trended toward Grant Wells early, then drifted toward Kyron Drones for three or four days, extending through one of the Hokies’ three-day mini-camps.

But Wells pulled away in the final days, “putting a stamp on it,” head coach Brent Pry said, and was named Tech’s Week 1 starter earlier this week, impressing in the Hokies’ most recent scrimmage work in Lane Stadium over the weekend and with his comfort in the offense as a second-year starter.

“His consistency throughout spring, summer, camp, his accuracy throwing the ball, his decision-making,” Pry said of Wells’ attributes. “In the scrimmage the other night, the defense was running a bunch of different looks and pressures and things and Grant did a great job ID’ing it, catching and throwing and keeping the drive alive. Now, he’s got to go out there and do it in Week 1.”

That addendum is why it doesn’t sound like this is a write-it-in-pen decision. Pry was insistent that the Baylor transfer Drones will have a role and play every week. He wouldn’t go as far as to call it a two-quarterback system, but he extolled Drones’ size (6-3, 235), athleticism and skill set.
