Forcing Turnovers A Focus As Virginia Tech’s Defense Looks To Make 2023 Leap

Less than a minute into the Hokies’ Week 2 contest against Boston College last season, Eagles quarterback Phil Jurkovec looked to push the ball up the right sideline. Tech cornerback Armani Chatman had blanket coverage, however, snatching the pass out of the air before turning it around for a 31-yard return to the BC 14.

Seven plays later, Virginia Tech punched it in for a touchdown and an early lead it would never relinquish in what was, start to finish, the Hokies’ most comfortable FBS win in 2022.

It was a game-changing defensive moment that was rare last season.

Chatman’s interception was just one of nine turnovers the Hokies forced in 2022, a figure that was tied for 129th nationally. Virginia Tech hasn’t forced fewer turnovers in a season since at least 1985, the furthest back stats are available online at HokieSports.com.
