2022 was a tough season for the Virginia Tech running backs. They played in an offense that didn’t function well, behind an offensive line that didn’t block well, and there were injury issues with Malachi Thomas and Keshawn King to boot. King is gone, but Thomas returns, and the Hokies reached into the transfer portal to try and upgrade their production and durability.
Tech should also be a bit deeper at tailback this year. It got good production from Bryce Duke and Chance Black in the spring game, and Brent Pry is on the record as saying that he’s high on true freshman Jeremiah Coney. Like most positions on the team, on paper, this running back unit is better this year in all three important areas: talent, depth, and durability.
I usually start these previews from the top of the depth chart and work my way down. For the sake of something new, I’ll start this one from the bottom and work my way up.
