Admittedly, Freedom (Va.) 2025 running back Jeffrey Overton Jr. had only cooked a couple of times in his life when he found himself in the middle of a grilling challenge at Virginia Tech.

On July 29, Overton was on hand at Hokie Fest, an invitation-only barbecue for recruits and their families. One of the activities was a cooking/grilling contest, in which recruits paired with a coach and had 20 minutes to prepare food. Overton said he helped season burgers, cut potatoes for fries and man the grill with commits Chanz Wiggins and Tyler Mason and assistant coach Elijah Brooks.

Overton didn’t win the contest, judged by coach Brent Pry and others, but the experience was a refreshing one. For Overton, who said he’s just beginning to sort through likes and dislikes in recruiting, it was a chance to see a different side of Virginia Tech.
