2023 Virginia Tech Quarterback Preview: The Competition

The Virginia Tech quarterback situation has been a hot topic since the offseason. The competition between Grant Wells and Kyron Drones began in the spring and has continued thus far through preseason camp.

The Tech coaching staff is currently rotating each player with the No. 1 offense. Wells ran the first team in practice No. 1 while Drones was with the first team in practice No. 2. The staff is trying to give each player a fair chance at the starting job and will continue to work in that fashion “until something tells us to do it differently,” according to head coach Brent Pry.

I’ve dissected both players just about as much as I can since Drones announced his transfer back in the winter. Rather than rehashing everything I’ve written since before spring ball began, I’ll take a different track for this preview and talk about things that I’ve seen with my own eyes.

I’m not going to include the short 15-20 minute sessions that we’ve seen. In those instances, there are either no defensive backs present when the quarterbacks are throwing or it’s one-on-one drills in which the quarterback doesn’t have to read the defense or make decisions. He knows where he’s throwing before the ball is snapped.
