What Is Virginia Tech Getting In Kyron Drones?

It seems we’ll have some coaching announcements soon, so I’m glad to be wrapping up (for now) this year’s transfer/JUCO discussion with quarterback Kyron Drones. Drones was a four-star prospect out of high school, and was recruited by Larry Fedora, who has an eye for quarterbacks.

There’s been a lot of talk (including from the head man himself in his interview with TSL) about the Hokies running the quarterback more. That’s something I’m all for, as this isn’t an offense that can leave tools on the table. But when I watch Drones playing for Baylor, I see a pass-first quarterback with a pretty good arm who’s comfortable in some areas the Hokies were weak in last season. At the same time, he’s got some room to grow.

This week, we’re going to zero in on Drones’ game against WVU and look at every single time he ran or threw. When Baylor’s starting QB got clocked on an illegal hit halfway through a shootout, Drones was called in. Drones was thrown in the fire pretty quickly, with the Bears having moved within sniffing distance of the goal line thanks to the targeting call. Drones got his feet wet with an option play that didn’t go anywhere; giving him a read after coming in cold off the bench was a hint at how comfortable the Baylor staff was with him.
