To him, the benefits of playing both sports are obvious. But for Covington Catholic (Ky.) 2024 tight end Willie Rodriguez, maintaining weight is difficult when he wrestles and plays football.

“I’ve put on 25 pounds since last year, so I’m still bigger,” he said. “I could block already, so with 25 pounds on my frame, it should be a fun year. I had a lot of protein shakes. I probably would put on more if it wasn’t for wrestling. You lose five pounds in practice.”

Recently, Rodriguez’s recruiting profile has boomed. He’s up to nine scholarship offers, though six of them, Virginia Tech, Indiana, Boston College, Pittsburgh, James Madison and Toledo, have come since Feb. 1. It’s a lot to take in, and with the influx of recent offers, Rodriguez said he has no plans for any cuts to his list or decisions.
