The season hadn’t even begun when St. Michael (Va.) defensive back Michael Matthews-Canty was forced to call an audible.

In the Warriors’ first preseason scrimmage, Matthews-Canty suffered a broken metatarsal bone in his foot. He’s been in a walking boot since and has missed five games. Matthews-Canty said he’s expected to sit out one more, on Oct. 8, before he hopes to return.

As a result, Matthews-Canty has reclassified to the 2024 class, as college programs have waited to see his recovery. But he’s also learned to focus on other things, with football out of the picture.
