Today we’ll conclude our looks at each position during spring practice by breaking down the Virginia Tech secondary. There is plenty of experience among the starters, but very little among the backups.

In a few cases, I’m not quite sure which Virginia Tech defensive backs are working at which positions. For example, I’m not sure if Chamarri Conner is the free safety (boundary safety) or the strong safety (field safety). I’m not sure if a guy like Nyke Johnson is working at cornerback, or perhaps working in as the third nickel, or even in a safety role. There’s only so much you can pay attention to in the limited amount of time that we’ve been able to view practice, so I don’t have all the answers right now, but I hope to after the Spring Game.

If I’m not sure about a certain player’s position, I’ll let you know throughout the course of the article.

The Hokies are fortunate to have a number of starters with a lot of experience. Both starting corners have over 1,000 career snaps, one starting safety has over 2,300 while another has over 800, and Virginia Tech’s projected nickel has over 600. There’s not much experience behind those players, however, which is why Brent Pry has said multiple times that he’s open to taking an experienced defensive back in the transfer portal this summer.
