Virginia Tech Position Change Analysis

Virginia Tech head football coach Brent Pry announced some position changes during his press conference on Wednesday morning. David Cunningham will have an article with quotes from Pry and other coaches, but I wanted to talk about the specific moves and what I think about them.

Remember, the spring is for experimentation. Not all of these moves are necessarily permanent, though we expect some to be. The new Virginia Tech coaching staff is still getting used to their personnel, and as a result there will be more position changes this time of year than what you might see in a regular year.

I was originally going to write an article on the tight ends today, but since that is a short article due to the limited number of players at that position, I’ve decided to push that one back and focus on position changes today. Nearly all of them have come on the defensive side of the ball, though we have a couple of things to mention on offense as well.

Keonta Jenkins (6-3, 207, So.) from Safety to Sam

Jenkins started the first two games of his college career at safety in 2020, then had some COVID-related issues. He has yet to regain his starting spot at safety, and generally speaking he didn’t show much progress on the field in 2021. The coaching staffs of both Justin Fuente and Brent Pry have raved about his physical abilities, however, and Pry and his defensive coaches have decided to try him at another position.
