Virginia Tech Basketball COVID Shutdown And The Upcoming Transfer Portal Season

Virginia Tech
Mike Young’s Virginia Tech basketball program is on a COVID pause for the third time since last February. (Ivan Morozov)

I’m just biding my time until the bowl game, and I really don’t have a whole lot to say. I’m on record as saying I’m happy with the offensive coaching staff, though we won’t know exactly what it will look like until we know who the wide receiver coach will be. My guess is that Tech is waiting until after Wisconsin’s bowl game (Las Vegas Bowl) to announce Joe Rudolph, though I don’t know that for a fact. As far as the defensive staff goes, I’m in full “trust Brent Pry” mode until proven otherwise.

I guess my only real question – and I hope we never know the answer – is that if one of the coaching staff members doesn’t work out, is Pry the type of coach who is willing to make a change? Either way, we’re talking two or three years down the road before enough evidence is built up either way, so we’ll cross that bridge when we get there.

It’s good to see the non-coaching staff coming together. Dwight Galt IV seems like a good strength coach hire, and Mike Villagrana as Director of Player Personnel seems like a very good hire. We’re talking about a guy who has been a Recruiting Coordinator/Director of Recruiting in the Big Ten and SEC, so he should have a pretty good idea of what he’s doing. We’ll talk about the support staff once it becomes more complete.

To get you over until the Pinstripe Bowl, here are some various thoughts on the basketball COVID shutdown, as well as a couple of names to watch as we enter Transfer Portal Season.
