On Wednesday of last week, Gilman (Md.) three-star defensive end Mattheus ‘Stretch’ Carroll had narrowed his list of possibilities to three schools: Virginia Tech, Maryland and Duke. At that point, he didn’t know which one he’d choose.

Two days later, Carroll figured it out. He set an announcement date for Sunday, where he announced that he’d committed to play for the Hokies. For Carroll, Rivals.com’s No. 23 player in Maryland for the 2021 class, Virginia Tech offered the best all-around opportunities.

“Really, just the combination of the two coaches, Coach (Darryl) Tapp and Coach (Bill) Teerlinck,” Carroll said. “Just their NFL experience and all the knowledge they have. I truly believe they’ll help develop me to move on to the next level. Also, the other guys were pretty good, Coach (Justin) Fuente, Coach (Justin) Hamilton and then, Coach (Jafar) Williams. We all built good relationships. And then, I just had a good visit there. That was the last visit I really got to get in before all the shutdowns happened. It was really good. We got a good academic presentation, so I feel good about the university. So, I really feel confident, that it’s a really good, full picture.”
