It’s not surprising that Aaron Moorehead is leaving Virginia Tech for Texas A&M. Let’s dig into the reasons and ramifications.
The 34-year-old Moorehead is generally seen as a rising star in college football coaching. He’s got the rags-to-riches history (from walk-on to NFL player), the Super Bowl ring, the enthusiasm, the charisma, and the recruiting acumen.
Virginia Tech was his first college assistant coaching position. Moorehead was a graduate assistant (GA) at New Mexico in 2009, and from 2010-12 at Stanford, he was an “offensive assistant for wide receivers” (from his hokiesports.com bio) who “worked with the wide receivers.” The Hokies were the first to give him a full assistant coaching position.
But that doesn’t mean he’s a Hokie till the day he dies. I’m sure he’s grateful, but the Virginia Tech job was exactly that: a job. His first one. His first opportunity. Not his last, by any stretch.
