Class Of 2014 DT Steve Sobczak Switches To Tech (Updated)

Former JMU pledge Steve Sobczak has verbally committed to Virginia Tech, giving the Hokies their 21st overall recruit and second defensive tackle prospect in the class of 2014. Sobczak, a 6’1″, 285-pound senior out of Massaponax High School (Fredericksburg, VA), made the call one week after being informed that Virginia Tech was altering his scholarship offer from a grayshirt to regular enrollment.

As a grayshirt, Sobczak would have delayed enrollment until January of 2015. He now plans to start his Virginia Tech career in the summer of 2014.

“They just told me they wanted me to come in August, and they hoped this would help me to commit,” said Sobczak, who initially impressed Frank Beamer and company with a strong performance at Tech’s one-day camp on June 2, 2013.

Sobczak admits he “kind of felt” he would change his commitment after getting regular enrollment status, adding that he “still wanted to sit down with my parents and be logical. I wanted to put everything on the table and see which school I wanted to pick.”
