Austin Peay Added to 2012 Football Schedule

The final opponent of Virginia Tech’s 2012 football schedule has been set. The Hokies will take on Austin Peay University next season, an FCS team from Tennessee.

Austin Peay replaces East Carolina on the schedule. The 2012 and 2013 games with East Carolina were pushed back so the Hokies could schedule a meeting with Alabama in Atlanta at the start of the 2013 season.

The Governors went 3-8 in 2011. They lost to the only two FBS teams they faced – Cincinnati (72-10) and Memphis (27-6).

Garland to Transfer

Virginia Tech announced over the weekend that sophomore point guard Tyrone Garland has decided to transfer. Garland’s playing time has decreased drastically since freshman point guard Marquis Rankin returned from injury. Garland played just one minute in his three final games as a Hokie.

With Erick Green injured to start the season, Garland started the opener against East Tennessee State, scoring 13 points. He scored a career-high 18 points in the next game against Monmouth. However, Garland didn’t prove to be a natural point guard, and at 6-1 he is too small to play the shooting guard position at the ACC level.

The Philadelphia native will return to his home town to play for La Salle, an Atlantic 10 program.
