Weekend Will Be Important For Jarrett

In some cases, timing certainly can be everything. Good timing certainly helped Virginia Tech score one of its top commitments of the 2011 recruiting class. One day last month, East Stroudsburg South (East Stroudsburg, PA) cornerback Kyshoen Jarrett , then a Pittsburgh commitment, had just learned of Dave Wannstedt’s dismissal when his cell phone rang.

“I was sitting on my bed and watching ESPN,” Jarrett recalled. “My brothers were watching too, and one of them saw the news that Coach Wannstedt got fired. I was like, okay, what do I do now? I was about to send a mass text to different schools to see who was still interested. Right before I sent it, Virginia Tech [assistant Torrian Gray] called. I had talked to Coach Gray before I committed to Pitt, so I had a little relationship with him from before. He said they still need a corner, so he gave me a call. He told me he thought I could do great things to help their defense. We hit it off from there. After that night, I had a chance to talk to Coach Foster and Coach Beamer. It’s actually funny because my coach has a good relationship with Coach Foster.”

Disappointment — “It sucks. Coach Wannstedt is such a cool guy. I committed to Pitt based on that staff,” Jarrett said — turned to excitement after the phone call from Virginia Tech. On December 21, the 6-0, 180-pound standout decided to call head coach Frank Beamer and commit.

“I just prayed on it and made sure it was the right decision. People had doubts, but it’s my decision. I feel like this is the best decision for me,” Jarrett said.
