Four Virginia Tech players were selected on Saturday in the 2010 NFL Draft. Counting Jason Worilds being selected by the Steelers in the second round on Friday, the Hokies had a total of five players chosen by NFL teams this year.
The first player off the board on Saturday was safety Kam Chancellor , who was selected in the fifth round with the 133rd overall selection by the Seattle Seahawks. Chancellor was projected to go anywhere from the third round to not being drafted at all. However, most projections had him going exactly where he ended up: the fifth round.
The next player taken was offensive tackle Ed Wang . He was selected 140th overall in the fifth round by the Buffalo Bills, which was a bit lower than where most draft analysts had him going. He will be the first Chinese-American to play in the NFL.
In somewhat of a surprise pick, punter Brent Bowden was taken by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the sixth round with the 172nd overall pick. It was a given that Bowden would end up in an NFL camp, but most draft analysts did not believe he would be drafted.
The last player selected was whip linebacker Cody Grimm, who will join Bowden in Tampa Bay. The Bucs took Grimm early in the seventh round with the 211th overall pick. Grimm will have to make the transition from whip linebacker to safety in the NFL.
Other Tech seniors, such as offensive guard Sergio Render, will sign free agent contracts with NFL teams in the coming days.
