Scrimmage Report: Taylor Sharp, Special Teams Sloppy

Terrific play from Tyrod Taylor and a sloppy day on special teams highlighted Virginia Tech’s second full scrimmage of the spring on Saturday. The Hokies have just three practices remaining before next Saturday’s spring game.

Tech’s senior quarterback was extremely sharp in all phases of the game on Saturday. He hit Danny Coale perfectly on two big plays down field, and he was right on the money all afternoon. Taylor’s timing was very good with the wide receivers, and his accuracy was impressive despite a gusty day in Lane Stadium.

Taylor was sharp from start to finish. His first pass was a 20 yard touchdown strike to Jarrett Boykin in the corner of the endzone. He put the ball perfectly to the outside of Boykin where only the receiver could catch it. Taylor never let up during the scrimmage, and it looks like he’s made even more progress since the end of last season.

Frank Beamer’s special teams were not as sharp. There was a blocked punt, a bad snap, a blocked field goal and numerous missed field goals. No one seems to be stepping up and winning the kicking job right now. Fortunately it’s still the spring, and there’s a long way to go before Beamer has to make a decision.
