Hokie Softball Headed to Tennessee for NCAA Tournament

Virginia Tech’s softball team, fresh off their second straight ACC Championship, will play in Tennessee in the NCAA Tournament. The Hokies will participate in a four-team regional with host Tennessee, Louisville, and Winthrop. Play begins this Friday, May 16th.

Tennessee (47-14) is the top-seeded team in the regional, with the Hokies (44-15) the #2 seed, Louisville (30-21) the #3 seed, and Winthrop (36-17) the #4 seed. The Vols are the #13 seed overall in the tournament, which seeds 16 teams out of 64-team field. VT had hoped to host a regional this year for the first time ever, but the Hokies didn’t quite make it. Tech was #22 in the RPI.

The format is double elimination, meaning a team must lose twice in order to be eliminated. Tech will play Louisville on Friday at 2:30 p.m., and Tennessee will play Winthrop in the second game Friday.

Louisville finished fifth in the Big East with a 12-8 mark, and advanced to the conference tournament semifinals where they fell 2-1 to eventual tournament champ DePaul.

According to the NCAA website, Game 3 of the Knoxville Regional will be televised on Saturday, May 17 at noon on ESPN2. It will also be available on ESPN360. We’ll know after Friday’s games whether or not the Hokies will be playing in that time slot on Saturday.

Other ACC schools involved in postseason play are North Carolina, Georgia Tech and Florida State.
