In-State Star Commits to Hokies!

Virginia Tech started March off in style, landing its second commitment for the class of 2008. The commitment comes from a talented in-state athlete who helped his team to a Group AA, Division 4 state championship this past season.

The commitment is from 6-3, 210-pound Amherst High School star Derrick McCoy.

“He committed to Tech this morning,” Amherst head coach Scott Abell said.

“Tech was the first one to offer him and he knew that’s where he wanted to go. Tech is a program that Derrick’s very familiar with. Tech has done a great job with Amherst kids (including current Hokie defensive tackle Barry Booker), and that plays a role. Kids recognize when other kids in the community have gone to a place and been successful. We take our kids to Tech’s camp every year, so Derrick had an early look at the program. When it came down to it, I think it was an easy decision for Derrick.”
