RB Evans Turning in Remarkable Season

Today, Warren Central (Indianapolis, IN) running back and Virginia Tech commitment Darren Evans was named USA Today Player of the Week for his performance in last Friday’s 76-7 win over rival Ben Davis. In the victory, Evans rushed for 243 yards on 12 carries and scored six touchdowns – all in just over a half of football. Evans’ performance was just a taste of what he’s been able to accomplish this season and, for that matter, throughout his career.

“They were the second-ranked team in the state. They’ve won eight state championships,” Warren Central Head Coach Steve Tutsie said of Ben Davis High School’s varsity football team. “It was just unbelievable. Darren’s just unbelievable.

“We’ve rushed for over 5,000 yards each of the last two years. Obviously, Darren Evans has got 2,000 of that each year. Of course you have to give our offensive line credit, but you have to give Darren credit because everybody this year is just loading up the box. Darren’s just a great running back. Frank Beamer said it best. He said ‘he’s just a great running back.’ When Coach Beamer says you’re great, I think you’re pretty good.”

For the year, Evans has rushed for 767 yards and 17 touchdowns on 63 carries (a 12.2 yards-per-carry average). While his production has been outstanding, it’s in another area where the star runner has caught his head coach’s attention.
