Powell (TN) tight end Lee Smith has already visited Virginia Tech twice – unofficially for the Ohio and Miami games, respectively – and will head to Blacksburg for a third time this weekend. This weekend’s trip will be an official visit for the 6-6, 250-pound Tennessee prep star.
A top tight end prospect, Smith, rated a 3-star prospect, has the size and ability to contribute immediately on the college level. He is a good athlete who plays basketball as well.
“Coaches just say that there are a lot of tight ends in the country who can run fast and catch and there are a lot of tight ends who can block, but it’s hard to find tight ends who can do both,” Smith said. “That’s what I hear from coaches all the time and they think I can do both.”
As far as his recruitment goes, Smith did have a clear leader at the beginning of the year. In February of 2005, Smith made a verbal commitment to Tennessee. He has since reconsidered and sent out film to a select number of schools in order to go through the recruiting process more thoroughly.
