Virginia Tech Fullback Production, Part 1: The Big East Era

Virginia Tech used fullback Sam Rogers extensively in the offense last season. Not only was Rogers deployed as a blocker, but the Hokies handed him the ball and used him in the passing game. Here are his numbers:

Rushing: 32 carries, 140 yards
Receiving: 20 catches, 230 yards, 1 TD

Last year was the first time in the ACC era that I can remember Virginia Tech using the fullback extensively in the offense. That’s mostly because the Hokies haven’t had a fullback capable of making things happen with the ball in his hands since the Big East era. That’s a big contrast from the 1990s, when Virginia Tech seemingly had great fullbacks who could make big plays every single year.
