For the final three games of last season, St. Mary Ryken (Md.) athlete William Johnson made the move to linebacker. Typically a wide receiver on offense and a strong safety on defense, he intentionally made the move as a way to boost his recruiting stock.
“They put me in the box, but I played linebacker for three games to get film out there,” Johnson said. “But I haven’t played much. I normally play strong safety and coming down in the box.”
Now, however, that will likely be his college position. On Tuesday, Johnson committed to Virginia Tech, which has him as a sure bet on defense. Depending on how he physically changes in the next year, he could play safety, where he’s become comfortable, or more likely, linebacker, which is still new. But either way, Johnson said he liked what the Hokies offered overall, and what he could do over the coming years in Blacksburg.
