Virginia Tech evened the series against Michigan on Sunday afternoon with a 1-0 victory. The teams will now play Game Three, which is about to get underway at the time of this writing. The winner will advance to the Women’s College World Series.
Tech improved to 48-17 with the win, while Michigan dropped to 52-7.
The Hokies got yet another dominating performance from Angela Tincher. Tincher pitched a complete game shutout, her second complete game in as many days. She struck out 15 batters while allowing just three hits.
Virginia Tech took advantage of two key Michigan errors in the first inning to score their only one run of the game. With Erin Ota on first base with one out, Charisse Mariconda hit a chopper to second baseman Samantha Findlay. Findlay went to second for the force out, but shortstop Teddi Ewing dropped the throw, allowing both runners to reach safely.
A single gave the Hokies the bases loaded with one out. Kelsey Hoffman came to bat and she hit a grounder to third base. The Wolverines got the force out at home plate, but catcher Roya St. Clair attempted to turn the double play at first base. Instead, her throw sailed past the bag into foul territory, allowing Mariconda to come around and score.
Michigan’s fielding left a lot to be desired for the entire game. The Wolverines made a total of four errors. Tech was able to take advantage once, and that’s all Angela Tincher needed.
