Gregory Appears Set for VT

Tony Gregory appears headed to Blacksburg next month. The 6-0, 190-pound running back prospect, a 2008 class signee who spent this past fall at Fork Union Military Academy, has submitted all necessary paperwork to Virginia Tech and the NCAA and expects to enroll at Tech on January 12th.

“Coach Newsome came down a couple of weeks ago,” Gregory said. “He said they needed my transcripts, so I gave him those. The Clearinghouse needed my test scores, so I sent them. Getting the paperwork was the priority. I guess if I don’t hear anything differently, then I’m good. It is looking like I’ll be there next month. If I don’t hear anything, I’m supposed to be there on January 12th.”

Back in August, a disappointed Gregory, a standout running back out of First Colonial High School (Virginia Beach, VA), relayed the news that he had fallen short of attaining qualifying standards and had to enroll at Fork Union. He obviously wanted to enroll at Tech in the summer along with other 2008 class members, but the detour to Tech has turned out to be a positive.

“I learned more about the way the game is played,” said Gregory, who rushed for an estimated 800 yards with seven touchdowns under FUMA postgraduate head coach John Shuman this past fall. “I learned how to slow the game down and about different blocking schemes. I learned how practice would be on the next level. The practice tempo and quality was more like it would be in college.
