Frank Beamer has won the inaugural Joseph V. Paterno Award, according to an announcement made by Maxwell Football Club President Ron Jaworski.
The Paterno Award is in its first year of existence, and it is given for achievements on the field and in the classroom, as well as service in the community. Virginia Tech’s graduation rate stands at 79%, one of the top marks in the country. Beamer is the only coach in the country to win 10 or more games in each of the last seven seasons.
Joe Paterno had this to say about Frank Beamer in a news release: “I’ve always admired the job Frank Beamer has done in Blacksburg, both on the field and away from it,” Paterno said. “I’ve been especially impressed by his work in the community. He stands for all that’s good in college sports, a great choice for this year’s winner.”
The Hokies are 11-2 and managed to win 11 consecutive games and an ACC Championship after dropping their first two contests to Boise State and James Madison.
The formal presentation of the award, along with the Maxwell Award (Auburn QB Cam Newton) and Bednarik Award (LSU CB Patrick Peterson) will be made at the Maxwell Football Club’s Awards Dinner on Friday, March 4, 2011 at the Harrah’s Entertainment Complex in Atlantic City, NJ.
