Seth Greenberg
- Tech had a good week, winning two of their three games over a six day
span. It wasn’t a great week because they didn’t get it done against BC. But
they did win a road win at NC State, which is difficult to do in this
league. - Tech did a pretty good job defensively at Boston College. They took away
the back cuts, and did a good job on Joe Trapani. They didn’t guard the ball
as well as they needed to near the end of the game. The biggest factor was
that they couldn’t shot the ball straight. They got good shots. Greenberg
wishes they had attacked a little more in transition. - When Victor Davila gets in foul trouble, it makes a big impact. Tech runs
a lot of their two-guard front through him. He has no backup, which means
Jeff Allen has to play the “5” position. When Allen is at
“5”, the Hokies run completely different things. With Davila out,
it limits what they can do offensively. If Greenberg could do it over again,
he probably would have brought Davila back in the game in the first half
with two fouls. - Jeff Allen had a great week, and he’s ACC Player of the Week. It was very
deserving. He was awesome against NC State and Boston College. He was
dominating. He got traffic rebounds, he made good decisions, and he stayed
out of foul trouble. - Malcolm Delaney and Jeff Allen have put up significant numbers during
their careers. Jeff Allen has 1,500 points and 1,000 rebounds. Delaney
became just the fourth player in school history to score 2,000 points. - Erick Green didn’t have a good shooting game against BC. The same thing
happened at Georgia Tech. However, he was taking good shots and not forcing
anything. Greenberg wants him to stay aggressive and shoot with confidence.
He would like to see Terrell Bell be a little more aggressive as well. - Tech has to get more verbal on their switches. They missed two switches
against Boston College that led to easy baskets because the Hokies didn’t
communicate with each other. - Greenberg told his team after the game that they are a good basketball
team. They just had one of those games where they didn’t have a good
shooting day. They have a chance in every single one of their games. - The Hokies record every single college basketball game that comes on TV.
They want film for possible postseason opponents. Greenberg also subscribes
to a service that lets him watch any college or NBA game online. For
example, he can pull up the latest Magics-Celtics game, click on “side
out-of-bounds plays”, and review all of those plays. Greenberg spends a
good portion of his day on Synergy Sports Tech. - The Hokies will honor Charlie Moir on Sunday. Moir was one of the first
people Greenberg consulted when he came to Virginia Tech. - Tech needs to control the ball against Georgia Tech (this Sunday in
Cassell). They had seven turnovers in their final nine possessions in the
first meeting, and that turned a very close game into a blowout. They have
to keep Iman Shumpert out of the lane. Tech has to force them into bad
shots. - The Hokies are using the first part of the week working on their own
system. They are working on some defensive fundamentals, they’ll get some
extra shooting in, and they’ll get their film work in beginning on Thursday.
Greenberg wants his team to be most concerned about the little things they
have to do to win over the next month. - The team is good physically, mentally and emotionally. Of they players
that are left, they are as healthy as they can be. - Greenberg feels like the team is getting better. They have committed just
20 total turnovers over the last three games. That’s a staggering statistic.
They are getting a little more efficient offensively, and getting the ball
inside better. They still have to make shots. They didn’t do that against
BC. - Greenberg thinks the ACC is no different than any other league. There are
one or two teams who have separated themselves, and a group in the middle
that is trying to survive and advance. - Greenberg felt bad for UNC’s Larry Drew (who is transferring) because
every loss was blamed on him last year. He took way too much abuse. On the
other hand, quitting the team in the middle of the season is just wrong. He
went about it the wrong way. He needed to man up and walk in Roy Williams’
office and do it himself, not get someone to do it for him. You can’t walk
away from adversity. - Greenberg is excited to get back to Cassell Coliseum. They have played
four of their last five ACC games on the road. There’s no place like home. - Zabian Dowdell has signed a contract with the Suns for the rest of the
year, and Greenberg is very proud of him. He can defend like an NBA player,
he’s strong, and he’s a winning player. He continued to work hard to reach
his goal, and now he’s a 26 year old rookie. If you can drop 33 at UNC, you
should be in the NBA. - Tech is going to continue to work on fundamentals on Tuesday. They will
take Wednesday off and get massages. On Thursday they will begin to prepare
for Sunday’s game against Georgia Tech (1:00, Raycom).
Monday was Day 2,263 of Virginia Tech’s continuous possession of the Commonwealth Cup.
