Virginia Tech landed its first commitment for the 2006 recruiting class when Ohio offensive lineman Clark Crum verbaled to Tech on Sunday, July 3.
Crum, 6-7, 282, hails from Scioto High School in Dublin, Ohio. Rivals.com lists Crum as the #26 prospect from the state of Ohio. Scout.com reported that Crum drew ten offers from the likes of Boston College and Illinois, as well as heavy interest from Notre Dame. Crum should have no problem qualifying with a 4.2 GPA and 1200 SAT.
Crum projects as an offensive tackle at the college level. He is an outstanding basketball player, averaging over 17 points per game. Playing basketball has helped him with his footwork. His main need at this point in his career is more time in the weight room, as is the case with most offensive linemen his age.
Crum’s commitment fills a big position of need for the Hokies. Tech will likely start four senior offensive linemen in 2005, and sources say that the Hokies will seek to sign about five offensive linemen in the recruiting class of 2006. With the uncertainty of Tech’s recent offensive line recruiting, Crum has an opportunity to see early playing time if he proves that he is ready. He will likely redshirt in 2006, and then be ready to battle for a spot on the two deep in 2007.
