With Jim Tressel’s resignation as head coach of Ohio State on Monday, Frank
Beamer has pulled into second place in wins amongst active Division I head
coaches. Beamer has over 200 career wins to his credit, and when you think about
it, that’s a pretty big deal.
First, here’s a list of the winningest active head coaches in Division I
college football, including 1-AA coaches.
Winningest Active Head Coaches in Division I Football |
||
Coach |
School |
Wins |
Joe Paterno | Penn State | 401 |
Frank Beamer | Virginia Tech | 240 |
Jerry Moore | Appalachian State | 226 |
Chris Ault | Nevada | 219 |
Mack Brown | Texas | 219 |
Jimmye Laycock | William & Mary | 208 |
No one on that list except for Joe Paterno is going to get to 400 wins,
obviously. However, Paterno is 84 years old, and he’ll be 85 in December. At
some point soon, he is going to retire, and at that point Frank Beamer will be
the winningest active head coach in college football. You’ve got to be really
good at your job for a long time to be able to say that.
