2010 Spring Practice Preview: Defensive Backs

Virginia Tech has good talent in the defensive secondary, as usual, but they
will also have to break in two new starters.  Both new starters, the free
safety and the field corner, play on the wide side of the field along with a new
starting whip linebacker. That wide side of the field will certainly be weak
spot of the Tech defense early in the season.

Kam Chancellor is gone as Tech’s free safety, and field corner Stephan Virgil
is also gone. The good news is that the Hokies are replacing Chancellor with a
player who appears to be a better fit for the position, and they are replacing
Virgil with a more physically talented, more explosive player. How soon those
players get up to speed mentally is the big question mark.

The Hokies would like a fourth cornerback to step up this spring, and they’d
also like to see progress from Antone Exum and James Hopper. Both of those guys
are an injury away from being in the starting lineup.
