Five-Star Josh Sweat Sets Decision Date (Updated)

(2:10 pm UPDATE** – Oscar Smith head coach Rich Morgan says Sweat will announce his decision at 10 am on December 10. Also, ESPN’s Gerry Hamilton reports that Sweat will take an official visit to Oregon this week. Hamilton also reports that Virginia Tech and Georgia have been in-home with Sweat so far this week, Ohio State will be in-home tomorrow, and Florida State will be in-home on Monday.)

Oscar Smith (Chesapeake, VA) senior defensive end Josh Sweat will announce his college choice at 10 am on Wednesday, December 10. Sweat, a consensus 5-star recruit and the number one overall prospect in the state of Virginia’s class of 2015, has a final list that includes Florida State, Georgia, Ohio State, Oregon, and Virginia Tech.

The Tigers standout took an official visit to Ohio State back in September, the same weekend the Buckeyes lost to Virginia Tech. He then traveled to Georgia, Florida State, and Virginia Tech in the month of November for officials. Sweat was in Blacksburg last Friday through Sunday. An official visit to Oregon will happen this week according to ESPN Recruiting Analyst Gerry Hamilton.

For the past month or so most feel Sweat’s choice will likely be either Virginia Tech or Florida State with Georgia perhaps having an outside chance. He will enroll at whatever school he chooses next month.

At 6’5″, 240 pounds, Sweat blends size with freakish speed – he posted an electronically-timed 4.46-second 40 at Nike’s The Opening this past summer – and athleticism. He entered his senior season ranked by 247Sports as the number one overall player in the nation in the class of 2015. A late September knee injury and subsequent surgery ended his senior season prematurely, but despite the injury schools have stayed in hot pursuit.

Defensive end is a huge need for Virginia Tech, which has landed talented recruits such as Darius Fullwood and Trevon Hill but lost out on North Carolina-bound prospect Jalen Dalton and in-state defensive end Darrell Taylor. Sweat has been and continues to be the top overall target for the Hokies in this class.

We’ll let you know as we get further details on Sweat’s decision.

  1. Lordy, do we need this young man! He would stand out and be a difference-maker at VT. He’ll just be another face in the crowd at F$U. He should have lunch with KJ and Bruce 🙂

  2. We need a Tuesday in home…don’t like FSU being in home right after ACCCG, & right before decision

  3. Josh, twice this year you have stood on the sideline…and VT won! Two of our more exciting wins. You don’t even need to suit up, we just need you to be there for good luck. Thanks.

  4. Please get that leg healed, well, and strong.
And please make Virginia Tech your educational and football home for the next four (or five) years!
