Hokies host Liberty

Virginia Tech will host the Liberty Flames tonight in Cassell Coliseum at 7pm.  The game can be viewed online on ESPN3.

Liberty is 2-0 on the season, with a 69-45 over Division III Randolph College over the weekend, and a 61-55 victory over the Delaware Blue Hens on Monday night.  The Flames have played dominant defense thus far, holding their opponents to 32.2% from the field and 20% from three-point range.

The Flames are coached by Dale Layer, who has a long relationship with VT head coach Buzz Williams.  Williams was an assistant under Layer at Colorado State, while Layer was an assistant under Buzz at Marquette.

Liberty has struggled with turnovers (29) through their first two games, but they have very good size.

G Pete Moller (6-3, 185, Fr.): 1.5 points, 2.5 rebounds, 7 total assists
G Joe Retic (6-3, 190, So.): 7.5 points, 2.5 rebounds, 9 total assists
F Tomasz Gielo (6-9, 225, Jr.): 18.5 points, 9.5 rebounds, 50% FG percentage
F Andrew Smith (6-9, 225, Jr.): 2.5 points, 4.5 rebounds, 3 steals
C James Johnson (6-10, 245, r-Sr.): 8.5 points, 5.5 rebounds, 61.5% FG percentage

The Flames will also bring David Andoh (6-7, 220, Jr.) off the bench, and he averaging 9.5 points and 6.5 rebounds.

Despite being a Big South team, Liberty is clearly one of the bigger teams the Hokies will face all seasons.  Tech, who is playing with mostly a four-guard lineup, will have to dictate the pace and play bigger than they are.  Liberty had a long year last season, but they should be improved in 2014-15.
