Virginia Tech Director of Athletics Whit Babcock has faced a looming task this summer — replacing his longtime confidant Desiree Reed-Francois, who served as Senior Associate Athletics Director. Now, Babcock has presumably filled that role.

Babcock announced on Friday that Virginia Tech has hired Brad Wurthman as the Senior Associate Athletics Director for External Operations. Wurthman will oversee a variety of topics centered around fan engagement, including ticketing, marketing, HokieVision and the department’s website. Wurthman will also serve as the athletic department’s liaison with IMG College and other groups.

“Brad will provide excellent leadership for our external team and should help us continue our collective momentum in Athletics,” Babcock said. “He brings a wealth of experience and creative ideas to Virginia Tech. He’ll help us as we strive to get better as a department. I’ve watched Brad continue to grow and evolve as a leader since we both worked together at Cincinnati. He possesses an excellent talent for developing memorable fan experiences which will assist us in further strengthening our connection with Hokie Nation and Southwest Virginia.”

Wurthman and Babcock have worked together before. Babcock promoted Wurthman to associate athletics director for marketing, sales and communications in 2012 at Cincinnati. Prior to joining Virginia Tech, Wurthman was serving as as Associate Director of Athletics at Illinois.

“I am humbled by the opportunity to join the Virginia Tech Athletics’ staff,” Wurthman said. “I’ve been fortunate to serve alongside Whit in the past and am excited to join the team there. I thank all of those who have helped me get to this point and cannot wait to get started in Blacksburg with this incredible group of staff, coaches, student-athletes and fans.”

Virginia Tech also states that Babcock is expected to announce another executive hire next week, “as part of a strategic restructuring of the VT athletics administration.”

  1. Too many Cincinnati people !!!!
Luckily Babcock did not previously work at hooville.

  2. Whit demonstrates again and again that good people want to wok for him. That’s the mark of a stellar leader!
