In an unexpected turn of events, Virginia Tech has landed one of the top prospects in the state of Virginia’s 2004 class today. Former Culpeper High School star safety Kent Hicks has officially accepted a full scholarship to Virginia Tech.

After signing with the University of Maryland in February of 2004, Hicks was not accepted by University Admissions despite qualifying fully under NCAA guidelines. Maryland wanted Hicks to attend prep school, however he wanted to go straight to college. He re-opened his recruitment and chose to attend Virginia Tech.

“He qualified, but for some reason he couldn’t get into Maryland,” Culpeper High School Head Coach Randy Bove said. “They wanted him to go to prep school but he chose to go the free agent route. He said that since he qualified he wanted to play in the fall and not wait another year. Long story short, he’s now going to Virginia Tech. He got his official packet from Virginia Tech [yesterday], and he and his Dad went down there [today] to make it official.”

Hicks’ quick decision came down to Tech and Tennessee. The Volunteers were in the final two with Maryland before and once again lost out on the talented safety prospect.
