ACC Tournament Seeding Scenarios

“See…we can still get the No. 3 seed!”

The ACC Tournament brackets still are not set.  Three games over the weekend will determine where the Hokies are seeded in next week’s tournament at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn.

Virginia Tech (10-7) at Miami (10-7), Noon, ESPN2
Clemson (11-6) at Syracuse (7-10), 2pm, ACC Network
UNC (11-6) at Duke (12-5), 8:15pm, ESPN

The Hokies can finish as high as No. 3 and as low as No. 7.  That’s how jumbled the middle of the conference is right now.  For Tech to get a No. 3 or No. 4 seed and receive a double-bye, first and foremost they have to win on Saturday.  If they don’t beat Miami, they can’t move up in the standings.

They also need some help from some other teams around the league.  To get the No. 3 seed, the Hokies need both Clemson and North Carolina to lose to Syracuse and Duke, respectively.  If that happens, Tech would win a three-way tie with Clemson and UNC because of their two head-to-head victories over those schools.  They would also win a four-way tie between with the Tigers, the Tar Heels, and NC State, should the Wolfpack defeat Louisville.

If the Hokies beat Miami, and one of Clemson or UNC wins, then Tech would be guaranteed the No. 4 seed in the tournament.  Tech wins any head-to-head tiebreaker over Clemson, UNC and NC State because they went a combined 3-0 against those schools this year.

If Virginia Tech defeats Miami, but both Clemson and North Carolina win on Saturday, then Tech would be the No. 5 seed in the ACC Tournament.  This scenario is very unlikely, as it would involve all three road teams winning.

If Tech loses to Miami, then forget everything above.  That locks the Hokies into the No. 7 seed.

Here are the times the Hokies would play their first game, depending on where they are seeded…

No. 3 seed: Thursday, 9pm, vs. either the No. 6 seed, the No. 11 seed or the No. 14 seed
No. 4 seed: Thursday, 2pm, vs. either the No. 5 seed, the No. 12 seed or the No. 13 seed
No. 5 seed: Wednesday, 2pm, vs. either the No. 12 seed or the No. 13 seed
No. 7 seed: Wednesday, 7pm, vs. either the No. 10 seed or the No. 15 seed

This tweet sums up the possibilities…

  1. It’s kind of amazing that the Duke win cemented NOT having to play on Tuesday, that is, the bottom six in the ACC, now the worst is 7th pretty average considering some of the wins we’ve (but also losses)
