Virginia Tech football had three players named to the 2017 All-ACC Academic team, which was announced on Wednesday. Kicker Joey Slye, defensive end Vinny Mihota and tight end Dalton Keene were Hokies awarded the honor.
In terms of numbers of players named to the team, Virginia Tech’s three players is tied for ninth in the ACC. Duke leads the way with 13 All-ACC Academic selections, while Pittsburgh had eight players named. The only schools to have fewer players named to the team were Boston College (2), Florida State (2), Georgia Tech (2) and North Carolina (1).
Slye, who exhausted his college eligibility this season, had a rocky year. The powerful kicker had little issue on kickoffs, but made just 15 of his 22 field goal attempts in 2017. Slye battled injuries in the second half of the season, and missed the Hokies’ games against Pittsburgh and Virginia.
Mihota is another player who battled injury in 2017. The rising redshirt senior started 11 games for Virginia Tech before tearing his ACL in the fourth quarter vs. Pittsburgh. Mihota finished 2017 with 24 total tackles, 3.5 tackles for loss and 1.5 sacks.
Keene, who enrolled for the spring semester prior to last season, saw a ton of playing time as a true freshman. The tight end/H-back started 12 games for Virginia Tech, serving primarily as a blocker. Keene finished the season with 10 receptions for 167 yards.
