Hokies Head Into March

The regular season is finally over.  It began back on November 10 with a 111-79 blowout of Detroit Mercy, and it ended on Saturday with a 69-68 heartbreaker at Miami.  It was a satisfying season.  The Hokies had a lot of high-profile wins, and until Saturday, they avoided the heartbreak that comes from a loss in a one-possession game that we see so often in most ACC seasons.  There were peaks and valleys as always, but in the end Tech went 10-8 in the ACC for the third year in a row, making this the first time the Hokies have had a winning ACC record for three consecutive seasons.  Buzz Williams has certainly earned all that money that Whit Babcock has thrown at him.

Today we’ll talk about Tech’s ACC Tournament draw, season expectations and results, and possible NCAA Tournament draws.

A Tough ACC Tournament Draw

Virginia Tech heads into the 2018 ACC Tournament as the No. 7 seed, and they’ll face either Notre Dame or Pitt on Wednesday night at 7 PM.  Translation: they’ll be facing Notre Dame on Wednesday night at 7 PM.  Pitt hasn’t won an ACC game all season, and they are unlikely to start now against a resurgent Irish team that finally got Bonzie Colson back.  If I’m Buzz, I wouldn’t spend one single second today or tomorrow preparing for Pitt.

That’s an unfortunate draw for Tech.  Notre Dame was picked third in the ACC in the preseason, and they could have finished there with Colson on the team all season.  Their second best player, point guard Matt Farrell, was also less than a hundred percent for much of the year.  When the Hokies beat the Irish in South Bend back in January, Notre Dame was without both of those players.  Tech won that game 80-75.
