Monday Thoughts: Halfway Through (Literally)

Virginia Tech football at Stanford
The last time we saw Virginia Tech football take the field, it trounced Stanford. (Ivan Morozov)

It was good to get a weekend off, but alas, I didn’t get to watch much college football — or any, really. My nephew got married down in Greensboro, N.C., and the wedding and reception ate up the whole day. But hey, at least he got married on a Virginia Tech bye weekend!

VT’s first open weekend came exactly halfway through the schedule, and I was wondering how often the bye week comes between games six and seven. I went exploring and found out (observe, as I drive managing editor David Cunningham crazy with Random Acts of Capitalization):

  • 2024 first bye weekend: after Game 6
  • 2023: Game 7
  • 2022: Game 7*
  • 2021: Game 4
  • 2020: (COVID, so does it count? Anyway …) Game 9
  • 2019: Game 3
  • 2018: Game 2
  • 2017: Game 6

*In 2022, the Hokies played a Thursday night game in Game 4 and took the following Saturday off, but the Thursday game was on five days rest, so it was really just a case of moving Game 4 from a Saturday to the prior Thursday, not really a “bye” week.

So there you go: it’s been seven years since the (first) bye week fell after Game 6. Now you can take that valuable nugget of information with you and impress your friends at the tailgate Thursday.
