MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. — The dramatic end to Friday night’s rivalry game in Hard Rock Stadium, which No. 7 Miami won 38-34 over Virginia Tech, overshadowed the Hokies’ costly mistakes that were once again too much to overcome.
For the fifth straight week, special teams was an issue. Time management was poor in moments, too. But it didn’t matter for the majority of the night because the Hokies were in control — until they weren’t.
On Tech’s last drive of the first half, John Love kicked a 57-yard field goal, the third-longest in school history. But two gaffes went overlooked.
Like the season opener against Vanderbilt, when Tech had two players wearing number zero on the field on a punt unit, there were two dressed in No. 17 on Love’s field goal — the kicker and Cole Nelson, who ran on the field late as a blocker. The team was lucky that no one caught it, though, because it would’ve taken three points off the board.
