Virginia Tech-Rutgers Review: That Play The Scarlet Knights Ran Over And Over

Well, a lot of folks are wondering about “that play” Rutgers ran for fifty uncontested completions or whatever it was. It all comes back to…drum roll, please…Split Zone. Taking into account this run, its RPO iteration, and play-action off the run, the Hokies were hurt by it more than even the broadcast alluded to.

I’ve written a lot about Split Zone, most recently in the Rutgers preview where readers watched it in action:

It’s probably Rutgers’ best/favorite concept, run or pass. Rutgers has a defensive end-turned-tight end named Kenny Fletcher (#12) who hits like a sum’gun, and he’s good at streaking across the backside of the formation and crashing into people on isolations, leads, and kick-out blocks. In the clip above, Fletcher bends in a little bit to pick up the nearest free rusher, which is good football on his part.
