Virginia Tech’s special teams have been like a game of Whac-A-Mole this season. Just when one issue’s been solved, another one pops up.
It’s an unfortunate situation, one all the more frustrating for special teams coordinator Stu Holt because it’s obscured all the good things the Hokies have done on that front this year.
“We’re producing, we’re doing some really good things in a lot of areas,” Holt said Tuesday. “But each week, you’re like, man, we’ve got to get this cleaned up or that cleaned up. So hopefully we’re moving in the right direction.”
The mistakes have been hard to miss, since they’ve all cost the Hokies points in one way or another. There was the double number fiasco at Vanderbilt, the punt block against Marshall, the field goal block against Old Dominion and Jaylin Lane’s fumble on a punt return against Rutgers.
