Rather than an Inside the Numbers piece this week, I decided to write an article pointing out some things that I noticed while watching some of the Virginia Tech-Marshall game. The condensed game version was the only one available on Sunday when I wrote my post-game article, but after speed-watching the full game this morning, I feel like I’ve got some more information.
I’m not as knowledgeable about X’s and O’s football as a guy like Brandon Patterson, so I’m going to keep this one pretty simple. I’m going to take a look at the four sacks allowed by Virginia Tech and what caused them. Then I’ll close the article by pointing out an example of how the Hokies will have to start playing better once they face the more talented teams on their schedule.
Let’s start with those sacks. Whose fault were they? As usual, Tech’s passing game issues can’t be blamed on any one individual or any one unit. It seems to be a group effort.
The Sacks, And Zone-Heavy Coverage
Kyron Drones was sacked four times in Virginia Tech’s win over Marshall. The offensive line always catches flak whenever a quarterback is sacked. Sometimes the criticism is fair and sometimes it’s not. Let’s take a look at all four sacks and try and determine who is accountable.
