When Vanderbilt’s Diego Pavia darted out from under center on an option run to the left in the second quarter last week, Jaylen Jones stalked him from the safety spot.
Recognizing the run, the Virginia Tech safety raced up from 10 yards behind the line of scrimmage, keeping Pavia in his sights and wrapping him up along with Caleb Woodson for one of the few times the Hokies got the quarterback on the ground for a loss.
It was a pure tackle with great form, something that, frankly, was a problem for Jones in his first year at the position last fall. He was determined not to let it hold him back again.
“That was one of my weaknesses,” said Jones, who made tackling a focus all offseason. “I wasn’t going to come back the same player that I was last year by any means.”
