The First Bank & Trust Friday Q&A: OL Size, Generating Big Plays, And More

Layth Ghannam, Virginia Tech
Layth Ghannam will start at left guard for Virginia Tech. (Ivan Morozov)

1) If Layth Ghannam starts, it seems we will have the lightest offensive line of anyone on our schedule (or close to it). Does that indicate that our run-first offense doesn’t feature road graders, but quicker blockers that can move to the next level? Or is it simply that our five best linemen are simply 3-5% lighter than our opponents’ lines? And, most importantly, does it really matter? — Gemrooty

Chris Coleman: All good questions. It’s also been my suspicion that the Hokies will have a very light offensive line this year. Let’s compare the average weight of the five starters to some other teams:

Vanderbilt: 330.4 pounds
Florida State: 321.4
Syracuse: 318.2
Georgia Tech: 311
Virginia Tech: 307.6

Of those five teams, the Virginia Tech offensive line is the lightest. However, I will note that the biggest o-line in that group (Vanderbilt) was probably the worst group in the country a year ago. The second biggest (Florida State) couldn’t block Georgia Tech in Week 0 in Dublin. Meanwhile, the second smallest (Georgia Tech) was able to pave the way for 190 rushing yards and 5.3 yards per carry against the Seminoles.
